The impact of ISO on culture media

The International Standards Organisation (ISO) has issued guidelines for the preparation and production of culture media for microbiology testing of food and animal feeding stuffs. This article explores some of the implications.

The quality of microbiological culture media directly affects the observations and inferences drawn from any testing. However, the complexity of these media and the natural variation of some constituents, means that the precise composition and characteristics may differ within and between laboratories. Standardisation will be beneficial to end users of both dehydrated and ready to use culture media. Here we examine its importance and benefits, and look at some of the basic requirements for good culture media.
